Habersham Community Theater actors — LeAnne Challenger, Emma Singer, Chris Parker, Hannah Holliday, Zack Smagur, Ryan Long, Grant Williams, Amber Miller and Steven Ward — will perform the “25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in Clarkesville.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee features eighth-graders or younger vying for the top spelling title in the nation, which is televised.

Now, two different community theaters will stage a fictionalized version of a similar competition with the “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Rated PG-13, the Tony Award-winning musical centers on a spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

The long one-act musical comedy was conceived by Rebecca Feldman with William Finn composing the music and lyrics, Rachel Sheinkin writing the book and Jay Reiss adding material.

Staging the musical first will be the Holly Theater in Dahlonega. Showtimes will be at 8 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 17-19 and 24-26 and March 3-5, at 69 W. Main St. in Dahlonega. Tickets are $14-$22.

Next in line will be the Habersham Community Theater in Clarkesville. Showtimes will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23-25 and March 2-4 as well as 2 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 5, at 1370 Washington St. in Clarkesville. Tickets are $18.
