In recognition of the 200-year anniversary of the end of the War of 1812, the Northeast Georgia History Center will focus its Family Day events on the life and times of soldiers of the era.

Family Day activities will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at 22 Academy St. NE in Gainesville. Admission is free.

Events will include War of 1812 re-enactors demonstrating and discussing aspects of soldiers’ lives and routines, a new exhibit in the History Center’s Rotating Gallery, hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. Visitors may make shakos (soldiers’ headgear), have silhouettes drawn and explore the events inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the lyrics to “The Star Spangled Banner.” Visitors may also sample one of Dolly Madison’s favorite foods.

Two days later, the history center will conduct a forum about Georgia, the Cherokee and the War of 1812.

Admission is free for members and $3 for nonmembers.
