As post time approaches for the annual Kentucky Derby, Good News Clinics hopes area residents will bet on its mission as it hosts a “Run for the Roses” fundraiser.

The Kentucky Derby-style event will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at The Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center, 331 Spring St., in downtown Gainesville.

Tickets are $75 per person and include one food ticket, two drink tickets, $10,000 in “funny money” and a commemorative photo. All proceeds benefit Good News Clinics, which provides medical and dental care to those in need.

During the three-hour event, guests — who are encouraged dress in their best Derby fashions — will receive race programs complete with explanation from the evening’s emcee. The emcee will parade the horses for each race and lead them to the starting gate. Guests may then place bets at antique betting windows using $10,000 in “funny money” included with each ticket. More “funny money” may be purchased with a donation to Good News Clinics. It will cost close to $20 for $10,000 more.

Cashiers will take bets and the trumpet will sound to start the race. Races will be shown on a 7-foot-by-10-foot screen.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third person with the largest purse at the end of the evening. They will also receive large bouquets of roses and the fellows may get horse trophies.

The event also will feature a silent auction, raffle and costume/fashion contest. Three to four food trucks will serve a variety of favorites. The bar will serve beer, wine, mint juleps and soft drinks.
