Georgias parks offer an inexpensive vacation alternative

Parents, still looking for a summertime option for your children? Georgia State Parks have the answer.

The state parks’ series of summer camps, including Junior Ranger Camps, keep kids entertained while they learn about the great outdoors.

Junior Ranger Camps are for youngsters ages 6-12, allowing them to explore Georgia’s wildlife, nature and fascinating history as they earn their way through three badge levels. Workshops will focus on nature hikes, arts and crafts, water games, fishing and outdoor cooking.

The nearby Junior Ranger Camp for Northeast Georgia is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27-29 at Smithgall Woods State Park near Helen.

Participants will receive Junior Ranger badges Friday after completing activities. The camp is for 6-12 year olds who will be receiving their first badge (Deer) or second (Fox). There are no activities for the Owl badge.

Register by June 13 by calling 706-878-3087. The fee is $45 for three-day camp, $50 if paid after June 13.

Other camps are offered in the area as well.

The Unicoi Family Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon June 11-15 at Unicoi State Park and Lodge near Helen.

Classes are offered, with no age limits. Fees are $30 per adult, $20 per child, $5 parking. Register in advance buy calling 706-878-2201, ext. 305.

The Mad Science Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in two weekly sessions, June 12-15 and July 17- 20 at Smithgall Woods State Park.

Each day of camp will provide a new understanding of the natural world, made fun through safe experiments. The fee is $75; call 706-878-3087.
