Arts Council releases new entertainment lineup
Summer entertainment includes Movies on the Green and the ASO

The Arts Council has unveiled its summer Smithgall Arts Center concert and Movies on the Green series schedule.

All concert and movies will take place outdoors at The Arts Council Smithgall Arts Center.

The Movies on the Green series begins with “Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” June 14. Pre-movie activities begin at 7:30 p.m., and the movie will start at dusk.

Vertigo, a local pop rock band, will perform July 3 in conjunction with the screening of “Top Gun.” The band includes Peggie Hoskins, Wayne Langford, Linda Dixon, Kerry Leo and Jay Millwood. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. and the movie at dusk.

Other movies in the series include “16 Love,” featuring actor Chandler Massey will local ties, on July 13; “The Lorax” in late July.

Moviegoers are encouraged to wear summer clothing and bring beach chairs, blankets and their favorite picnic treats.

The Arts Center concert series includes:

A free concert by the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band — Jazz Guardians is set for June 29. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. Dinner also is available for purchase.

The history of this unique band began with the Mexican War, where its members became the only Army band to receive a combat distinction from the president. The Army Ground Forces Band’s history includes service in the Civil War, the War with Spain, the Philippine Insurrection, and both world wars.

The Jazz Guardians, a 21-member big band, tours the country from coast to coast showcasing a rich musical heritage.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform its annual outdoor concert July 20 (rain date July 22). Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the concert will start at 8. The symphony will celebrate its 37th anniversary with the Arts Council.

The Swingin’ Medallions will perform at 7:30 p.m Aug. 3 (rain date Aug. 9).
