Award-winning Broadway performers and musicians plan to celebrate “102 Years of Broadway” this Valentine’s Day in Gainesville.

As part of the Arts Council’s ongoing Pearce Series, the performers aren’t just fans or enthusiasts. Their voices have graced the Great White Way for years.

“These are all stars (who) have actually performed on Broadway,” said Nairika Cornett, marketing and arts in schools coordinator for the Arts Council. “A lot of these (actors and actresses) have actually opened roles as leads.”

All the performers are Broadway veterans who have been featured in a variety of productions that are household names.

Neil Berg, who will serve as emcee and director of the event, is a seasoned Broadway composer and lyricist who has received a multitude of awards and acclaim for his work.

“(Berg) will actually guide the audience through the history of 102 years of Broadway from its golden era to today,” Cornett said. “He tells you a little anecdotal history through stories and then most of it is told through the songs, and it explains how Broadway has been at the forefront of musical history.”

Professional musicians will accompany the performers as they engage the audience with renditions of some of Broadway’s most famous works, including songs from “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Miserables” and “CATS.”

As for what makes it a perfect Valentine’s date?

“Nobody does romance, debauchery the way Broadway does,” Cornett said. “It will be fantastic.”
