With the help of an 11-year-old trumpet prodigy, the Northwinds Symphonic Band is planning an Oscar-worthy tribute to the silver screen.

Northwinds' concert, "The Movies and More," is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Brenau University's Pearce Auditorium, 500 Washington St. NW in Gainesville.

It will feature Geoff Gallante, an 11-year-old trumpet player from Alexandria, Va.

"We thought it would be a great idea to bring him in so he can be sort of an inspiration to other young performers in the area," said Ron Evans, Northwinds conductor.

Geoff has been playing the trumpet since he was 3. He has performed with the Louisville Symphony, the U.S. Naval Academy Concert Band and the Canadian Navy Band. He also has performed at the Kennedy Center and more than a dozen professional sports arenas.

In his short career, Geoff has already shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti and Maynard Ferguson. He's made several television appearances, including on CBS' "Early Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. The will be on sale at the door, or attendees can reserve advance tickets by calling The Arts Council at 770-534-2787.

In addition to hearing this rising star on the trumpet, Northwinds will treat the audience to some of the finest movie scores, Evan says. Included will be songs from classic films like "Gone with the Wind" and iconic musicals like "The Fiddler on the Roof."

Geoff will showcase a variety of tunes from his repertoire. Audiences can expect to hear everything from "nearly impossible to play" compositions from the masters to groovy tunes made popular by trumpeter Herb Alpert in the 1970s.

Before closing out the show, Evans will have an onstage interview with Geoff to discuss his musical accomplishments.

"He's done some amazing things so far," Evans says, "and we're expecting amazing things from him (this weekend)."
