The Federal Trade Commission reports that an estimated 9 million people will become victims of identity theft this year. Parents, keep in mind that 31 percent of those people will be children, teenagers or young adults. Identity thieves target young people because of their unblemished credit histories and because the theft often goes undetected for months if not years, the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences reports.
