No IDs, arrests yet in shooting after East Hall home invasion

One child in vehicle remains hospitalized; deputy, others recovering from minor injuries

POSTED: June 17, 2017 2:34 p.m.

The names of those involved in an East Hall shooting late Thursday that left a deputy and child injured have yet to be released, and no arrests have been made.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is also withholding who fired first in the Thursday shooting between a deputy and a vehicle carrying two adults and likely five children on Campbell Road.

The investigation is ongoing, Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said Saturday.

A Hall County deputy was shot in the chest while responding to a reported home invasion in the 4300 block of Campbell Road at around midnight Thursday.

The deputy’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet, but he did receive a “minor grazing wound to the head,” according to Wilbanks.

Gunfire was exchanged after a car leaving the scene of the reported home invasion swerved at the deputy shortly after he arrived on scene.

The children in the car ranged in age from 6 to 16. Two were age 6, Wilbanks said on Saturday, noting that he didn’t have all of the information about the ages of those in the vehicle.

The adults and one of the children were also injured in the exchange, though none of the injuries are life-threatening. The deputy was at home and in good health on Friday.

The child suffered hand injuries and remains at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment, according Wilbanks. The adults injured in the shooting were treated at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center and released. No one has yet been booked into Hall County jail, Wilbanks said.

All of the suspects were taken into custody Friday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Wilbanks told The Times that “information regarding who fired first is still being withheld, pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident, routine in officer-involved shootings.

Names of those involved in the shooting will likely be released next week, and it’s unclear when the investigation will be concluded.
