A deputy was shot and multiple adults and a child injured in an exchange of gunfire in East Hall around midnight Thursday.

“They did confirm that there was a home invasion, that armed subjects entered the house prior to the deputies’ arrival,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said.

As deputies approached a home in the 4300 block of Campbell Road in response to the home invasion, a car leaving the scene with multiple adults and children inside swerved at one of the deputies, according to the sheriff’s office. Shots were exchanged between the deputies and those in the car.

The injured deputy’s ballistic vest stopped a shot to the torso; he also received a “minor grazing wound to the head,” Wilbanks wrote in a news release. He was treated and released.

Wilbanks said the deputy, who has not been identified, was an eight-year veteran of the department working in the patrol division.

“When I spoke to him, he had already been awake over 24 hours, so he was kind of in a fog as you can imagine,” Wilbanks said. “But he went home and he’s resting. He’s in good health.”

The child’s injuries are not life-threatening, but the child was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment.

Two adults also received injuries that are not life-threatening and were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

As of 3 p.m., Wilbanks did not have an update on the injuries and did not have the names, ages or genders of those involved.

The adults were suspected to be in the age range of late teens to early 20s, Wilbanks said.

All suspects were taken into custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is investigating. It is standard for the GBI to respond in officer-involved shootings.

No one had been booked in to the Hall County Jail as of Friday afternoon, but the scene wasn’t cleared until Friday afternoon.
