Construction crews stay busy laying block for a new tire storage area Wednesday morning at Sam's Club in Oakwood. The new storage area is part of a multi-area renovation plan throughout the store.

How about sushi or espresso with that tire purchase?

In an effort “focusing on fresh and convenience,” Sam’s Club is redoing its store at 3839 Mundy Mill Road, adding new services and products.

“This building has been here nine years, so it’s time for it to get refreshed,” store manager David Keasler said during a store tour Wednesday. “With that usually comes the new amenities.”

By fall, shoppers at the membership-fee-based chain will see a “new fresh island with fresh-rolled sushi, more premium meat selections and fresh seafood delivered from boat to club within 48 hours.”

Also planned are changes to the club’s popular cafe, including self-order kiosks and phone charging stations. Menu additions will include coffee, made-to-order sandwiches and smoothies.

“The prices are going to stay the same on the stuff we have,” Keasler said. “I’m not sure what they’ll be on the new stuff. We’ll get those (later).”

Other changes include an expanded health and wellness area, which will feature a new optical center and a private health services room for immunizations, dietary help and other services.

Walk-in coolers featuring produce and dairy items also will be added.

A covered area where shoppers can now load items into their vehicle will serve as an area where people can pick up items bought online. Customers will put information into a kiosk and an employee will bring the items to their car.

Also, construction is underway on a new tire storage area.

“Our tire showroom, which is currently all tires and (tire) racks, will be retail space where you see tires but you don’t have all the backstock sitting in front of you,” Keasler said. “So, it will be more member-friendly coming into there.”

Construction began a couple of weeks ago, with the contractor using part of the front parking lot as a fenced-off staging area for the project, the manager said.

The work is “expected to be wrapped up by the end of the year and before the busy holiday shopping season,” a company press release states.

But Keasler said he’s hopeful work could wrap up by mid-October.

In the meantime, “we’re trying to make (the changes) as seamless as possible, so that members don’t feel it,” he said. “Other than the moves of the merchandise — they feel some of that — we’re trying to stay out of their way as much as possible.”

Sam’s Club has been in Oakwood since 1994, previously located off Frontage Road where Northeast Georgia Health System’s Corporate Plaza is now.
