Junior League distributes food at new location

POSTED: July 15, 2014 12:03 a.m.

Junior League of Gainesville and Hall County continues to help local families by providing food to the needy, but the group’s move to a new office location stalled growth with a low turnout at last month’s distribution.

The Junior League now distributes food for its “Feeding the Future” initiative at 1547 Riverside Drive in Gainesville.

“We’ve been doing this program for about five years,” Junior League spokeswoman Alisha Jaume said. “It’s gotten exponentially larger every year. When we started, it was just families (who) signed up for it, but now it’s open to any family.”

The organization partners with the Georgia Mountain Food Bank to give out boxes of food on specific distribution days.

“We do them on the third Saturday of the month,” Jaume said. “So our next one is this Saturday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

On the date of distribution, parents or guardians can come to the league office, fill out a short form with their name, address, child’s name and school, and receive a box of food.

“The most important aspect for us is that they have a child in the city or county school system that we can help support,” Jaume said.
