Chicopee Mill road project step closer to fruition

POSTED: July 11, 2014 12:58 a.m.

Gainesville City Council is prepared to enter into an agreement next week with the Gainesville and Hall County Development Authority for construction of a road in the Chicopee Mill Industrial Center that will open property for development.

Officials from the Development Authority have been working to finalize costs and get the project underway for a few months.

Plans to award a road construction contract to Allied Paving were put on hold when initial bids came in over budget. Officials are now working with Allied to renegotiate the costs to get the project under budget.

The Development Authority and city officials then reached out to the Georgia Department of Transportation and will receive $50,000 in grant money for the project.

The remainder of the financing will come from the sale of a 10-acre site in Industrial Park West.

Tim Evans, vice president of economic development at the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, said part of the difficulty in financing the project is the fact grading costs are rising across the region.

Ultimately, officials said the road would cost between $200,000 and $250,000 to complete.

The road will provide access to the new 40,000-square-foot headquarters and production facilities for manufacturer REP Inc., as well as open access to another development site on the back end of Industrial Park West.

The project, which officials described as “shovel ready,” will take between 60 and 90 days to complete once ground is broken.
