University of North Georgia baseball program takes over No. 1 spot in Division II poll

POSTED: March 20, 2017 3:45 p.m.

Following five league wins last week, the University of North Georgia is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Division II poll for the first time in school history.

The Nighthawks (21-4, 8-1 Peach Belt Conference) picked up league wins against Armstrong Atlantic, Auburn-Montgomery, West Georgia and Augusta University during the week.

Also for North Georgia, Connor Hoover was named Peach Belt Player of the Week, while Dylan Peppers was tabbed Peach Belt Pitcher of the Week.

Last week, Hoover had four home runs, five extra-base hits and 10 RBIs. For Peppers, he threw 12 shutout innings and allowed just seven hits and three walks.

The Nighthawks are now in sole possession of first place in the Peach Belt.

North Georgia is now riding an 11-game winning streak, its longest since moving up the NCAA in 2006. The Nighthawks started the 2004 season with a 24-4 mark.

On Tuesday, North Georgia hosts West Georgia at 5 p.m. in Dahlonega.
