The South Hall Student Council donated $1,000 to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Members of the student council sponsored a school-wide dance and a Valentine's Day flower sale. Proceeds from these annual fundraisers help support the school and other charities. Rachel Glazer recently won first place in a statewide essay competition. The topic was "Today's Choices Affect My Future." She was awarded a $650 scholarship. The essay now proceeds to judging at the international level, with the winner receiving a $2,500 scholarship. Brenau University’s Teaching Math class students presented a Math Olympiad on April 22 for Fair Street International Baccalaureate World School fourth-grade students. The university students designed and supervised activities reinforcing measurement and estimation skills in conjunction with the Georgia Performance Standards. White Sulphur Elementary School’s kindergarten unit recently raised $674 in a Math-a-Thon for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each child was given a math workbook with 238 problems and asked to find sponsors for each problem completed. Student Koltin Zona raised $140. The Gainesville Gateway Garden Club and the Crabapple and Fleur de Lis garden clubs presented the flower show "Color me Young" March 28-29 at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center. It was presented in conjunction with Youth Art Month. Josh Burgess, son of John Burgess and Beth Holmes, has obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. Burgess is a member of Troop 221, Oakwood. American Legion Post 121 recently presented a $500 check to local disabled veteran Gordon Spears, who was injured while serving in Iraq. Spears served for 27 years, six deployments and three combat tours. He works full time as a lieutenant at Lee Arrandale State Prison. Gainesville native Laura Frame has won the American Red Cross’ Fall Into Donating drawing, held recently in Athens. Frame graduated from the University of Georgia in 2007 with a degree in biology. She began donating blood at East Hall High School in 2002.

Chloe Holden placed third in a competition featuring young musicians from the Southeast, ranging in age from 7 to 18 — all competing for the same prize. Holden, 10, has been a concert harpist for one year. She began her studies in voice and harp in Gainesville but has moved on to study with nationally renowned harpists in the Atlanta area. Johnson High School students recently visited with World War II veteran Clyde Hudson as part of a class project. Ninth-grader Cody Collins asked Hudson to visit the class as part of his group’s presentation on the subject. Hudson brought books, photographs and his honorable discharge certificate to share with the students. Wauka Mountain Elementary students recently painted a multi-textured representation of the school building. The painting was done as part of Atlanta visual artist Karin Mervis’ week-long residency at the school.
