Local children have the chance to take a day out of their Thanksgiving holiday break to learn a little about their country’s past.

The Northeast Georgia History Center is scheduled to hold a "Homefront Holidays" workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23. The workshop will let children experience the World War II era and holiday celebrations during the 1940s.

"Our intent was to do something a little bit different," said Julie Carson, administrative coordinator at the Northeast Georgia History Center. "We have the World War II exhibit here that is going to be winding up in November and so we got the idea to do a workshop with the theme of ‘Can you imagine what it would be like to be a child in World War II?’"

Carson will present the workshop along with Glen Kyle, the History Center’s managing director.

The workshop, open to 30 children, is designed for ages 8 to 12. The cost —$5 for History Center members and $10 for nonmembers — includes lunch. Registration closes on Tuesday.

"The children will be divided into three groups and will rotate to three stations and the stations will focus on family life," Carson said. "They will listen to a radio show from that era then they will also learn about V-mail and they will get to write a pretend V-mail to their father or brother or someone overseas.

"(They will make) period type Christmas decorations and we were going to use those decorations to decorate a tree here at the History Center that will be up through the Christmas season."

Children also will learn about the Victory Garden and how food and clothing were rationed during WWII.
