Leland Taylor has been named the recipient of the 2008 Tommy Aaron/Charlie Aaron scholarship. Leland is a graduate of North Hall High School and plans to study medicine at Davidson College in Charlotte, N.C.

Staff Sgt. Jeremy Young, a 1996 graduate of White County High School in Cleveland, has been awarded a purple heart for his duties served during two tours in Iraq. The medal was awarded June 13. Young will soon be deploying to Afghanistan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army seven years after graduating from high school. He is the son of Dana and Patty Young of Cleveland. His wife, Mandi, and son Gunner, 2, live in Colorado.

Ricky Lee Whelchel, son of Patricia Sosebee Whelchel and Howard A. Whelchel of Gainesville, has graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering. He is the grandson of Donald and Ruth Sosebee of Gainesville and Ethel Whelchel of Buford. In April, Whelchel's paper, "Mechanical and electrical Characterization in Age Hardened Waspaloy Microstructures," won first prize in the Bodycote International Prize Paper Competition, and will be featured in an upcoming edition of the International Journal of Heat Treatments and Surface Engineering.

The Gen. James Longstreet Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy gave out awards April 27 at its annual Confederate Memorial Day commemoration service at Redwine United Methodist Church on Poplar Springs Road in Gainesville. Awards were given to David Mitchell Pruitt and Benny Russell Leach.

Air Force Airman Brandon R. Roell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Eric and Sandra Roell of Gainesville. Roell is a 2003 graduate of Norcross High School in Norcross.

Jeff Whalen of Flowery Branch has been given an Appreciation Award by the University of Georgia College of Family and Consumer Sciences. The award is presented annually to an individual who has contributed to the support of the college financially, through programs or the legislature.

Eighth-graders at West Hall Middle School participated in mock interviews with volunteers form the community. This career unit, which matches the Georgia Performance Standards, was the brainchild of eighth-grade reading teacher Marlene Galvin. The project helped students learn vocabulary related to the job search process, create resumes and learn interview etiquette. Then, each student was interviewed as though the interviewer was a representative of the field that matched the student's career interest.

Good News

The Medical Center Auxiliary Inc. honored volunteers May 7 at its Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Tom and Lou Hanson were named the 2008 Marjorie Covington Smith Auxilians of the Year. Margaret Ellett received the Nell W. Wiegand Patient Friend Award. Joan Kosmala was recognized for 15,500 hours of service. Lorena Collins was recognized for 21,500 hours of service. Sixty-six other volunteers were honored for their service to the Auxiliary. Volunteers gave 55,000 combined hours of service during Northeast Georgia Medical Center's fiscal year 2007.

Johnson High School students recently visited with World War II veteran Clyde Hudson as part of a class project. Ninth-grader Cody Collins asked Hudson to visit the class as part of his group's presentation on the subject. Hudson brought books, photographs and his honorable discharge certificate to share with the students.

The North Georgia College and State University Patriot Choir recently visited Wauka Mountain Elementary and performed a program of patriotic music. This auditioned group of singers represents the college at military events and is under the direction of Jack Broman.

Chloe Holden placed third in a competition featuring young musicians from the Southeast, ranging in age from 7 to 18 - all competing for the same prize. Holden, 10, has been a concert harpist for one year. She began her studies in voice and harp in Gainesville but has moved on to study with nationally renowned harpists in the Atlanta area.

Good news

American Legion Post 121 recently presented a $500 check to local disabled veteran Gordon Spears, who was injured while serving in Iraq. Spears served for 27 years, six deployments and three combat tours. He works full time as a lieutenant at Lee Arrandale State Prison.

The following students have been named to the dean's list at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland for the fall semester 2007: Jacob Edward Bagwell and Suzanne Leigh Bell, both of Gainesville. The following students have been named to the president's club with a semester average of 4.0: Sherry Benfield McEntire of Alto, Christopher Allen Davidson and Brooke Christine Mathis, both of Gainesville, and Shaun Patrick Hughes of Oakwood.

The Hall County Library Association has named Rachel Chambers, library media specialist at Myers Elementary School, as Hall County Media Specialist for 2008-2009. She will now compete for the state honor from the Georgia Library Media Association. Chambers, a Brenau University graduate, earned school library media certification along with her master's degree in instructional technology from the University of Georgia. Prior to coming to Myers Elementary as media specialist in 2004, she began her eight years in the system teaching seventh-grade literature and language arts at South Hall Middle School.
