Rich, all of Gainesville, have recently been named to the academic achievement list at Georgia Southwestern State University for the fall 2009 semester. To be eligible for this honor, students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Taylor Pinion, 7, of Gainesville created her own fundraiser to help the people of Haiti, selling handmade construction-paper crowns for $1. Within a few days, she had raised $25. All money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross.

The following students recently placed in the Region 2 competition for Skills USA. The event judged students' abilities to tackle professional skills such as masonry, computer-based graphic design and automotive service, among other subjects.

The Tanger Outlet Center in Commerce recently awarded $28,834.35 to the Northeast Georgia branch of the American Cancer Society. The donation is part of Tanger's Annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, and the check presentation took place at Tanger's annual merchant luncheon and awards program at the Commerce Civic Center.

Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy fifth-graders London Harper and Brady Holcomb were chosen by their teachers to be honored by the Gainesville Optimist Club as Outstanding Students of the Year. The organization sponsors Youth Appreciation Week, and London and Brady were honored along with students from other schools by attending a dinner at the Gainesville Civic Center.

Army National Guard Pvts. William M. Richards and Coe D. Suchke have graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus. The training consists of basic infantry training and advanced individual training.

The Gainesville Newcomers Club recently presented My Sister's Place, an emergency shelter for homeless women and children, a $10,000 check toward its building fund. My Sister's Place is raising money to build a house in order to serve more women in need. The Gainesville Newcomers Club is a nonprofit organization for women, designed to provide opportunities for new residents in Hall County to make friends and learn about our community.
