Namhee Kwak of Gainesville has received the Burroughs Welcome Scholarship Award. Kwak is a fifth-year student in Northeastern University's Bouve College of Health Sciences' pharmacy program. This award is presented annually to recognize undergraduate students demonstrating excellence and financial need.
The Georgia Art League at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center announced the award winners of the 2012 Late Spring Exhibit in the Sawyer Gallery. Bob Westervelt was the judge for the awards. First place went to Marie-Helene Gardelle for her raku "Maternite." Second place went to Ruth Money for her oil painting "A Life Well-Lived," and third place went to Dana Ross for his 3-D wood sculpture "Edge."

The DaVinci Academy seventh- and eighth-grade band participated in the Ninth District East Georgia Music Educators Large Group Performance Evaluation at Hart County High School Performing Arts Center in Hartwell. In their first ever LGPE participation, the group earned superior ratings from all three performance judges.
The Jackson EMC Foundation, a charity funded by the electric cooperative's members through their donations to the Operation Round Up program, has awarded grants totaling $29,500 to four agencies serving area residents.
Several local students recently competed in the Annual Health Care Occupations of America State Leadership Conference in Athens. The top three students in each of the 54 events have qualified to compete at the HOSA National Leadership Conference held in June in Orlando, Fla. Anyone who has wandered through the lobby of the Visual Technology Building on the Clarkesville campus of North Georgia Technical College may view an array of images captured by students in the photography program. But once a year the studio doors are thrown open for a public viewing with visitors getting up close and personal with the budding photographers.
Julian Lopez of North Hall High School and Madison Tasker of West Hall High School have been selected to participate in the EarthCare: The Leadership Challenge of the 21st Century program, according to Darrell Synder, Georgia Power Gainesville area manager.
North Hall's Andrew James Cape earned first place in the proficiency competition for dairy production placement at the 87th Georgia FFA State Convention last month. The event was held April 23-25 at the Macon Centreplex.
