Brooke Arroliga, a fourth-grade teacher at Sugar Hill Elementary, recently experienced an act of kindness and good fortune. Arroliga lost an item of great value - her teacher bag full of work that "my hard-working students had submitted to me."
Joel D. Whetstone, son of Jay and Carolyn Whetstone of Gainesville, was presented his first set of gold bars and a certificate of commendation by retired Army Lt. Col. Dave Gordon of the Georgia Mountain Chapter, Military Officers Association of America, during commissioning ceremonies recently at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega.Whetstone completed his degree requirements and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard.

Heidi Schureck has recently completed her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. She is a member of local Girl Scout Troop No. 109. Heidi, in collaboration with Paint Slingers, has painted murals throughout the children's preschool space of First Baptist Church in Gainesville.
Students Chris Collins and John Hayes of North Georgia College & State University's Department of Chemistry were recognized for their outstanding undergraduate research earlier this month at a regional conference in Raleigh, N.C.
The Gainesville Newcomers Club recently gave the Gainesville Police finger food and other varieties of homemade dishes to show appreciation for their dedication to the community. With the help of Cpl. Kevin Holbrook, who works in the Community Relations Department, Rae Aldridge, Beverly Collins and Linda Brady delivered an assortment of baked goods provided by numerous GNC volunteers.
Georgia Mountain Food Bank raised more than $53,164.50 and received more than 6,313 pounds of food in its Stock the Shelves Campaign, which will help build up nutritional food supplies for more than 58 distribution partners.
