Heidi Schureck has recently completed her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. She is a member of local Girl Scout Troop No. 109. Heidi, in collaboration with Paint Slingers, has painted murals throughout the children's preschool space of First Baptist Church in Gainesville.

Chellsy Vanessa Gomez, 15, represented Gainesville for the title of Miss Georgia Teen USA 2013 this week at the Woodland Performing Arts Theatre in Cartersville.Gomez is the daughter of Dr. Richard Gomez and Lori Lake. She is a sophomore at North Georgia Christian School and attends church at Good Shepherd Lutheran.

Army Pvt. Melody Peppers has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Gainesville Newcomers Club hosts senior Valentine’s Day luncheon

The Gainesville Newcomers Club was the host of a Senior Citizen Valentine's Day luncheon Feb. 12 at the Senior Life Center in Gainesville. Volunteers and some of their spouses served a hot lunch and ice cream sundaes to approximately 93 Hall County seniors. During the luncheon, Newcomers Club volunteers entertained their guests with games and prizes.

Roa graduates from basic combat training

Army Spc. Thomas W. Roa has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Benning. During the nine-week training period, he received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions and core values. Roa is the son of Mark T. Roa of Gainesville. He is a 2007 graduate of West Hall High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2011 from the University of Georgia.

Good News Clinics receive donation of diabetes supplies

Pharmacy students from the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepared diabetes care packages in January to benefit patients at the Good News Clinics in Gainesville.
