The following local students graduated from Gainesville State College in the school's 2011 summer and fall commencement ceremony on Dec. 10. Students graduating Summa Cum Laude have a collective GPA of 3.90 to 4.0. Students graduating Magna Cum Laude have a collective GPA of 3.70 to 3.89. Students graduating Cum Laude have a collective GPA of 3.50 to 3.69.

Thuy Hanh and Stefanie Darby. Thuy Hanh Tran won a silver medal and an honorable mention at the Georgia Scholastic Art Competition at Georgia State, while Stefanie Darby won a silver medal. There were overmore than 2,500 artworks submitted.

The Gainesville High School Varsity Academic Team won the North Georgia Academic championship in a sudden death final question against South Forsyth High School. In so doing, the team defeated Stephens County, Franklin County, Lambert, Habersham Central, West Forsyth, White County, North Forsyth, Flowery Branch, Dawson County, Lumpkin County, West Hall, Pickens, Chestatee, Gilmer and South Forsyth. These high schools represented the school finalists in the North Georgia six regions.

Air Force sergeant retires after 20 years of service

Technical Sgt. Marla Camille Rubin of the 94th Communications Squadron retired June 12, with more than 20 years of military service. She was born in Gainesville and was a 1993 Gainesville High School graduate.
