Three local students honored at Young Harris College event

Kangaroo Express operated by The Pantry Inc., recently announced its Florida and select Georgia and South Carolina stores have raised more than $453,000 for Give Kids The World Village, a 70-acre, nonprofit "storybook" village in central Florida that provides cost-free, weeklong vacations for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Students from Chestatee, East Hall, Flowery Branch and the Lanier Charter Career Academy recently attended the International DECA Conference in Anaheim, Calif. More than 16,000 students from around the world competes in marketing-based events.

This past week Jeff Gulle, photography instructor at North Georgia Technical College, competed in the annual print competition with the Georgia Professional Photographers Association. For the second year in a row, he won "Photographer of the Year."

Hall County Sheriff's Office participates in Chamber Chase

A crowd attended this year's Chamber Chase 5-kilometer and 2-mile Wellness Walk. The Hall County Sheriff's Office received the "Most Creative Over" for its T-shirt design thanks to Baxter's Shirt Factory. The Chamber Chase was a warm-up for the inaugural Sheriff's Summer Sprint 5K.

Two local teams - one from World Language Academy and one from Davis Middle School - placed first in their respective divisions at the State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on April 6. As a result, both have qualified for the World Finals on May 21-26 at Michigan State University.

Chorale singers perform at Catholic Church

Choral Explosion No. 12 was April 14 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Cleveland. The Lumpkin County Varsity Singers, the Brenau Chamber Vocal Ensemble, the University of North Georgia Chorale Singers and Le Belle Voci participated in the event. The program was especially memorable as it was the first time music groups from the newly consolidated University of North Georgia Gainesville and Dahlonega campuses performed in the same concert.

Consul General of Ireland visits

Gainesville Newcomers' Club was proud to sponsor Paul Gleeson, the first Consul General of Ireland, at its monthly meeting in March. Gleeson spoke about Ireland and answered questions. An informative and enjoyable meeting was had by all.

DAR honors cadet for service with medal

Cadet Technical Sergeant Gabriel Robertson of the Civil Air Patrol in Gainesville was recently awarded the Silver Cadet Medal by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his work with the Wreaths Across America service in April at the Alta Vista Cemetery.
