Two students from Hall County, Johnathan Kytle and Chad Williams, were named to the summer semester dean's list at Middle Georgia College. To make the dean's list, a student must have at least a grade-point average of 3.5 out of a possible 4.0 while maintaining a full academic load.

Johnson High School rising senior Mimi Sam placed nationally at the 2011 FBLA National Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Fla. National Leadership Conference was the final competition for the year with members from all over the U.S. coming together to compete for the top ten places in each event. Sam placed third in the nation in Word Processing II. Along with the honor, she won $300 in cash prizes.

Gainesville Newcomers Club hosts senior Valentine’s Day luncheon

The Gainesville Newcomers Club was the host of a Senior Citizen Valentine's Day luncheon Feb. 12 at the Senior Life Center in Gainesville. Volunteers and some of their spouses served a hot lunch and ice cream sundaes to approximately 93 Hall County seniors. During the luncheon, Newcomers Club volunteers entertained their guests with games and prizes.

Roa graduates from basic combat training

Army Spc. Thomas W. Roa has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Benning. During the nine-week training period, he received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions and core values. Roa is the son of Mark T. Roa of Gainesville. He is a 2007 graduate of West Hall High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2011 from the University of Georgia.

Pharmacy students from the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepared diabetes care packages in January to benefit patients at the Good News Clinics in Gainesville.
