he Colonel William Candler Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution recently was honored for having the most new members in one year. The Georgia State Society of the DAR awarded them with a silver bowl for the achievement. The chapter also celebrated with an "Over 100 Members" luncheon. The new members are Christine Lanzing, Linda Martin, Marilyn Martin, Mary Lynne George, Abbe Kubit and Florence Truman.

Lula Elementary fifth-grader Madison Saxon won the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Annual Agriculture Day essay contest. Fifth-grader Carli Echols was awarded an honorable mention. Both are students of Vickie Savage and entered the contest as part of a class writing assignment. The topic was "Young People in Agriculture: Learning, Doing, Dreaming."

The South Hall Student Council donated $1,000 to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Members of the student council sponsored a school-wide dance and a Valentine's Day flower sale. Proceeds from these annual fundraisers help support the school and other charities.

Brenau University's Teaching Math class students presented a Math Olympiad on April 22 for Fair Street International Baccalaureate World School fourth-grade students. The university students designed and supervised activities reinforcing measurement and estimation skills in conjunction with the Georgia Performance Standards.

Two East Hall Middle School students recently had their artwork on display at the Georgia State Capitol. The art show, sponsored by the Georgia Art Educators Association, is an annual event in celebration of youth art month. Chelsea Miller and Esmeralda Trujillo attended a reception where they met Sen. Lee Hawkins and Rep. Doug Collins. The students and their families, along with art teacher Jennifer Shiver, were also able to see artwork from students all over the state.

Evan Carter attended Georgia Southern University's Scholars' Day in Statesboro. To be invited to the event students must score a minimum of 1,200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT and have a strong academic average in high school courses. At the event students have the opportunity to meet leaders at the school and interview for academic scholarships.

Author Fran Stewart recently spoke at the Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library Lunch and Learn series. Stewart is a freelance editor whose "Biscuit McKee" mystery series, set in small-town Georgia, features a middle-aged librarian and the library cat, Marmalade. The next Lunch and Learn series for the group will be at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Braselton Municipal Building in Braselton.

Students from Chestatee, East Hall, Flowery Branch and the Lanier Charter Career Academy recently attended the International DECA Conference in Anaheim, Calif. More than 16,000 students from around the world competes in marketing-based events.
