Derek Rich recently has been named to the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society at the University of Georgia in Athens. To achieve this honor, students must have completed 30 semester hours while maintaining a 3.3 grade-point average or maintained a ranking in the top 15 percent of their class. Rich is a graduate of North Hall High School and the son of Benny and Kathleen Rich.

The Gainesville Navy JROTC Precision Rifle Team recently traveled to Augusta for a competition. The team finished fourth overall with a score of 1,109. Sporter team member Alex Uscanga was the top shooter with a score of 254 and Max Alanis was second with a 242. Noe Galvan was third with a 222.

The seventh annual Bruce Burch & Friends benefit concert honoring the late Gainesville songwriter John Jarrard recently announced the disbursement of funds to area charities. The concert grossed approximately $97,000 through sponsorships, an auction and ticket sales, according to Allen Nivens, chairman of the committee organizing the annual event.

Rebecca Hartfield, a science teacher at North Hall High School, has been named a 2008 Class Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. Hartfield was nominated by Brittany Dial, a senior at North Hall. Hartfield teaches International Baccalaureate biology, advanced placement biology and honors chemistry at the school.
