The Georgia Department of Transportation announces the winners of the annual District-wide equipment driving skills competition called the "DOT Roadeo." The Roadeo is an annual competition between Georgia Department of Transportation employees to determine the "Best" driver in six categories: Single Axle Dump Truck, Double Axle Dump Truck, Tractor Mower, Backhoe, Motor Grader and Lowboy.

2nd Lt. Bryant Wine of Gainesville was commissioned into the Georgia Army National Guard in a ceremony held May 3 at North Georgia College & State University. As part of the ceremony, Wine's parents, Brent and Nancy Wine, attached his new lieutenant's gold bars to his uniform.

North Hall Middle School's seventh-grade health class received a Health Certificate of Achievement from the Georgia School Nutrition Association for its win in the statewide Move it Challenge. Students wrote a poem or essay about being healthier and then the class chose the best three for competition. They were recognized at UGA with Coach Mark Richt at a dinner in the athletic dining facilities.

The Georgia Art League at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center announced the award winners of the 2012 Late Spring Exhibit in the Sawyer Gallery. Bob Westervelt was the judge for the awards. First place went to Marie-Helene Gardelle for her raku "Maternite." Second place went to Ruth Money for her oil painting "A Life Well-Lived," and third place went to Dana Ross for his 3-D wood sculpture "Edge."

Gainesville Newcomers Club hosts senior Valentine’s Day luncheon

The Gainesville Newcomers Club was the host of a Senior Citizen Valentine's Day luncheon Feb. 12 at the Senior Life Center in Gainesville. Volunteers and some of their spouses served a hot lunch and ice cream sundaes to approximately 93 Hall County seniors. During the luncheon, Newcomers Club volunteers entertained their guests with games and prizes.
