Troy Loewen, who graduated from North Georgia College & State University in May 2007 with a degree in criminal justice, was deployed in April to Iraq with the 4th Battalion 27th Field Artillery Regiment Iron Thunder supporting the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. The Spirit of Joy Church in Flowery Branch has been awarded a $2,500 grant by the Jackson EMC Foundation for its food pantry. The food pantry served more than 1,400 people in 2006 and nearly 1,600 in 2007. Grant funds will be used to purchase food.

The estate of the late Leta Green Braselton has donated $7,800 to the Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library. The money will fund an endowment, with the proceeds used to support the Braselton Library's summer reading program in memory of Braselton.
Midshipman Tyler Dunagan graduated cum laude from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., with a bachelor of science degree in logistics and intermodal transportation. The Gainesville Newcomers' Club recently was host to members of Flotilla 2-9 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to talk about the hazards of being on Lake Lanier. Flotilla members spoke to about 90 women about observing safety regulations for boating and swimming, especially now that the water level is about 15 feet below full pool. Flowery Branch High School raised $3,343.42 for Pennies for Patients, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Ginger Jackson's class was the top winner overall, with $816.69 raised. The class won a lunch at Olive Garden.
Tyrone "Hollywood" Roberts visited students at Riverbend Elementary School earlier this year. He delivered a speech to encourage students to persevere and show determination in order to make their dreams come true. Roberts demonstrated several of the famous Harlem Globetrotters' basketball tricks with a little help from some of the Riverbend students.
Army National Guard Pvt. Jessica L. Lawrence has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of David Lawrence of Dawsonville. Lawrence graduated in 2001 from Jesus' Name Academy in Dawsonville.
MOMS Club of Gainesville recently took a field trip to the Georgia State Patrol on Cleveland Highway. Cpl. Curtis Bradshaw arranged to have a helicopter flown in from Athens and a couple of motorcycles brought in from Atlanta. The kids were also able to see and sit in one of the new patrol cars. Staff Sgt. Jeremy Young, a 1996 graduate of White County High School in Cleveland, has been awarded a purple heart for his duties served during two tours in Iraq. The medal was awarded June 13. Young will soon be deploying to Afghanistan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army seven years after graduating from high school. He is the son of Dana and Patty Young of Cleveland. His wife, Mandi, and son Gunner, 2, live in Colorado.

A crowd attended this year's Chamber Chase 5-kilometer and 2-mile Wellness Walk. The Hall County Sheriff's Office received the "Most Creative Over" for its T-shirt design thanks to Baxter's Shirt Factory. The Chamber Chase was a warm-up for the inaugural Sheriff's Summer Sprint 5K.
