Rally honors former superintendent

A celebration of singing and rousing speeches was held in honor of former Gainesville city schools Superintendent Steven Ballowe on Thursday.

About 40 people gathered at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Sumter Street to thank the former superintendent for the contributions he made to Gainesville students. The event was hosted by the Newtown Florist Club and the Gainesville-Hall County Chapter of the NAACP.

Proposed Flowery Branch historic district debated

FLOWERY BRANCH - Local residents and property owners pleaded Thursday night for Flowery Branch City Council to leave them out of a proposed historic district for the town or kill plans for the district altogether.

"What this town needs is construction, not preservation," said Dan Puckette during a public hearing at the Historic Depot on Railroad Avenue. "I don't think you need to ram this down people's throats. It's their property - let them do what they want."

Falling tree kills Gillsville man

An elderly Banks County man was killed Tuesday night when a large tree fell into his bedroom during a thunderstorm, though his wife survived because she had decided to sleep in the living room.

Lloyd Echols, 70, was asleep in bed when he suffered a fatal head injury at about 10 p.m., said Gene Hart, chairman of the Banks County Board of Commissioners.

The model car lay shattered on the basement floor, its pieces scattered in every direction.

For weeks, a young Tod Peavy had tinkered and toiled and thought of nothing but this car. But his foster mother resented the red roadster. She hadn't given it to him.
