Hall County may raise taxes to pay for books, buses

Hall County residents could be looking at a tax increase to fund school district projects. The county may raise taxes to fund a number of increased expenses, including new teachers, textbooks and school buses.

"The budget growth this year is similar to the growth of previous years' budgets within a few percentage points," said Lee Lovett, Hall County deputy superintendent.

Gainesville's Dent loses bid for DOT board post

ATLANTA - A former top official of the Georgia Department of Transportation was defeated in his bid to become a member of the state board that oversees the agency.

Larry Dent, a retired DOT deputy commissioner, lost in the second round of balloting to Steve Farrow, a former state senator from Dalton. Farrow was elected Thursday on a vote of 17-7 to the 9th District on the state transportation board.

City school's finance woes go back to 2007

Gainesville school superintendent Steven Ballowe said Thursday that the system's financial woes can be traced to March 2007, when the city government notified the system that property tax collections were $3 million less than projected for the 2006-07 budget year.

But word didn't travel beyond the former finance officer, who was Angela Adams, he said.

Residents clamor for change in city school leadership

About 100 people complained loudly Thursday night about the Gainesville school system's financial woes, with many saying they believed Steven Ballowe should go as superintendent.

"This man runs a bank," said area resident Bill Morrison, standing next to and pointing at Dick Valentine, chief executive officer of United Community Bank. "But if he goes $7 million in the hole, he's fired."

Cagle says he won’t endorse any candidate for transportation board post

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle said Wednesday that he risked a considerable amount of political capital in the last race for the State Transportation Board and he, along with the House speaker and the governor, will sit on the sidelines for today's caucus to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Chairman Mike Evans.

The Chestnut Mountain Republican made his comments during a visit to Forsyth County. He indicated the race was wide open.

Woman drowns in North Hall pool

Alcohol may have played a role in the accidental drowning of a 34-year-old Gainesville woman in a residential pool Wednesday in North Hall, authorities said.

Residents at a home in the 5900 block of Whitmire Road called 911 at 1:14 p.m. Wednesday to report the drowning, Hall County sheriff's Sgt. Kiley Sargent said.
