Longtime art collector, James Mathis, to sell art collection

For a few days, the clock has been set back 30 years as James Mathis Sr. reclaims his role as the great promoter.

In his heyday, Mathis would serve cherry pie at his bank to commemorate George Washington's birthday. He gave out piggy banks with the likeness of cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy to encourage young people to save. He seemed to never run out of new ideas to bring customers and their money into the bank.

Assistant principal, critically injured in wreck, recovers slowly

An assistant principal at Johnson High School is stable but remains in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital two weeks after surviving a one-car wreck on his way to work.

Mike Adcock is still in the intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital, recovering from broken bones in both legs, a broken ankle, pelvis and rib, which contributed to a collapsed lung, said Hall County school system spokesman Gordon Higgins.

Injured Hall deputy undergoes third surgery

A deputy who was injured in a standoff with a 65-year-old Lula man last week is recovering from his third surgery, a spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputy Joe Groover, 35, underwent a surgical procedure that repaired some of the skin on his right forearm Thursday, Hall County Maj. Jeff Strickland said.

Hospitality High gives students hands-on experience in resort industry

Seven Hall County high school students will be spending three days a week this semester at Lake Lanier Islands Resort fielding guests' requests at the front desk, creating gourmet cuisine, making beds and even scrubbing bathrooms.

Hall County school system is partnering with Lake Lanier Islands Resort this year to create Hospitality High, a hands-on program in which students from various Hall County high schools get firsthand experience in the hospitality industry.

Jingle Mingle brings chicken lighting, celebration to downtown Gainesville

A family-filled event included kiddie train rides and free horse-drawn carriage rides with the evening culminating in the lighting of the Main Street Market's Holiday Chicken, which sits atop the building. This year's lighting was accompanied by a sound and light show by Deb and Don Harkrider. Adults could also marvel at the beautifully lit trees adorning the square. Stores on the square decorated for the season and extended their hours, allowing shoppers extra time to find and purchase Christmas gifts.
