Patrol will investigate deadly wreck

GAINESVILLE - The Georgia State Patrol plans to investigate Sunday's wreck in Dawson County that left a 33-year-old Dahlonega man dead and six people injured.

Christopher Sams was headed east on Ga. 53 near War Hill Park Road Sunday afternoon when a Mitsubishi Montero crossed the center line and hit the Buick LeSabre in which Sams, his wife, Tonya, and their child were riding.

Gainesville man helps spread hope through ShelterBox program

When Mike Freeman first heard about the ShelterBox program, it piqued his interest. Freeman, a retired Episcopal priest and former president of the South Hall Rotary Club, was intrigued by the idea of delivering a box filled with needed essentials to major disaster areas.

In January, after a year of application, review and training, Freeman's telephone rang at his home in Gainesville. The next afternoon, he was on a plane bound for the African nation of Zambia, where the worst floods in half a century had brought widespread devastation.

Fire destroys mobile home

Hall County firefighters responded to a singlewide mobile home fire at 1:47 a.m. Sunday. Capt. Scott Cagle said the mobile home, located on the 5000 block of Wallace Road off Athens Highway, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. Cagle said no one was home at the time of the fire.

Consultants to help Gainesville schools fix accounting problems

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville city schools is working to fix some bookkeeping problems stemming from last year, according to a report school officials plan to make at the City Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

There were "many bookkeeping errors with entries during the past year, meaning most data is not correct," says the report, a memo Thursday from Superintendent Steven Ballowe and finance director Janet Allison.
