These fast-food dinosaurs aren’t toys

A fast-food restaurant is probably the last place you'd expect to see a dinosaur, at least one that's not a prize in a kid's meal.

A glimpse inside the McDonald's on Frontage Road in Oakwood reveals glass cabinets full of museum-quality dinosaur fossil replicas, including a Tyrannosaurus rex claw, a T. rex tooth and a dinosaur egg. Also on display along the walls are replicas of a 70 million-year-old mosasaurus fossil, which looks like an alligator with fins.

Local Red Cross chapter chooses executive director

Just as the peak hurricane season arrives, the Northeast Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross has hired a new executive director.

The Gainesville-based chapter announced Tuesday that Hall County native Philip Reed had taken the position. On Wednesday, Reed was already down in Atlanta meeting with other disaster preparedness officials, as storms Hanna, Ike and Josephine approached the southeastern United States.

Dahlonega water plant is at half capacity

The city of Dahlonega is under an outdoor watering ban after one of its two water filters failed, cutting the city's water capacity in half.

City Manager Bill Lewis said the structure under the 32-year-old filter collapsed on Friday. The city has found replacement parts in Idaho and North Carolina, but it could take two weeks to a month to get the repairs made and the pump back in service.
