Three Flowery Branch High School seniors won first place Saturday at the Georgia High School Association's State AAA Literary Meet at Houston County High School. The school's girls trio - Sophia Allison, Sarah Dunham and Delana Thomas - were competing for a third consecutive year, having won the Region 7-AAA Literary Meet each year.

Furry or feathered, Animal Control supervisor could handle all critters

During the past 31 years, Hall County Animal Control Supervisor Rick Phillips has handled roughly 200,000 animals - and not a single one has bitten him.

Current and former county officials and judges joined the Hall County Humane Society in honoring Phillips' 31 years of service Monday evening at the Humane Society on West Ridge Road. Phillips will retire from the county government position on April 25.

Thunderstorms boost lake levels

The rain associated with Saturday's storms helped increase the level of Lake Lanier by nearly three-quarters of a foot.

At midnight Thursday, the lake level was 1,054.77 feet above mean sea level. By midnight Sunday, the level had risen to 1,055.50 feet, an increase of .73 feet.

Moms, children find friends with MOPS

Children and moms alike may find instant allies in a group called Mothers of Preschoolers.

MOPS is an international organization for mothers of children preschool age or younger. MOPS of Gainesville, chartered with the First Baptist Church on Green Street, held a consignment sale Saturday at the church to raise funds for the local chapter.

Storms cause widespread damage in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) -- Crews hauled broken glass and furniture out of downtown streets Saturday and homeowners surveyed damage caused by a possible tornado that surprised many residents and basketball fans.

More thunderstorms headed across northern Alabama toward the city Saturday morning. "We're bracing for another round of whatever mother nature throws at us," said Lisa Janak of the state emergency management agency.

Gainesville school board plans Enota traffic update

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville school system administrators plan to give an update Monday night on traffic at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy.

Principal Sally Meadors and Keith Vincent, the district's maintenance and transportation director, are set to discuss how traffic is faring at the school since making some changes to the parking lot and pick-up/drop-off area behind the school and near the gymnasium.

Here comes Fido Cottontail?

Easter came early for many Hall County dogs on Saturday morning.

Hall County Parks and Leisure held the third annual Easter Bone Hunt in Laurel Bark Park in which 15 pooches hunted for 200 hidden plastic eggs containing dog treats. Additional eggs contained certificates for gifts such as dog bowls and travel packs.
