Gainesville schools one step closer to charter status

A state committee set up to review applications of charter school systems has voted to recommend that the remaining petitions for charter system status, including one from the Gainesville City Schools, be approved by the State Board of Education.

The Charter Advisory Committee made its recommendation on Friday, and it was announced Monday. In addition to Gainesville, the systems seeking charter status are the city systems in Decatur and Marietta, as well as Chattahoochee County schools.

Chinese acrobats perform as part of Brenau art series

Kids, don't try this at home. Three performers lifted a fourth into the air with only their legs, gracefully raising their other limbs outward, looking like a willowy pink flower atop a small round platform.

Performers spun umbrellas and tables like tops using just their feet. Others leapt and flipped through rings simultaneously, in different directions. One performer stood on tiptoe on another's head. The cast dazzled the audience with color, agility and a hint of suspense as they defied gravity with grace.

Budget cuts take 11 jobs at Hall County Health Department

Six employees of the Hall County Health Department will lose their jobs at the end of this month as a result of budget cuts.

Dr. David Westfall, director of District 2 Public Health, which administers health departments in Hall and 12 other Northeast Georgia counties, said he was lucky he didn't have to give more people the bad news.
