Roadwork on I-985 Exit 22 should clear up soon

Road construction work has made traveling around Exit 22 at Interstate 985 a little more challenging in the past couple of months, as frequent motorists to the area have discovered. But work is winding down as road crews put the finishing touches on the project.

The state has completed adding turn lanes at the entrance and exit ramps at I-985 and U.S. 129. Also, workers have finished adding turn lanes in the median that take motorists traveling northbound on U.S. 129 to the southbound and northbound entrance ramps.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is hard to miss. When the 27-foot-long fiberglass hot dog on a giant bun zips along the highway, it elicits plenty of stares.

"It's like being in a parade all the time when you're driving down the road because you're waving all the time," Wienermobile driver, or "hotdogger," John Woodbridge said.

Perfect attendance records rewarded

Some days it was freezing cold outside the blankets. Other days, students just might not have felt so good.

Regardless of the temptation to play hooky, about 2,000 Hall County and Gainesville city school students had perfect attendance for the 2007-08 school year, according to Will Schofield, superintendent for Hall County Schools.

Suspects sought in attempted robbery of taxi driver

Gainesville police are investigating a late-night attempt to rob a local taxi driver, according to reports.

The department's investigation surrounds a report from a Uni-Taxi driver that he was struck in the head with a handgun after driving two men to the intersection of Mill Street and Patricia Drive at about 2 a.m. Thursday, according to a report from Gainesville Sgt. Johnny Ray.

Gainesville sales tax collections down, city manager says

Gainesville's sales tax collections have declined significantly because of the slowing economy, City Manager Bryan Shuler told City Council members Thursday.

Shuler said income statements from the April collections of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax were lower than that month's collections have been since April 2005.

Nominees for new judgeship named

The committee that will provide Gov. Sonny Perdue with a short list of candidates for Hall County's new state court judgeship received six nominations by the close of the submission deadline.

According to an e-mail release from the state Judicial Nominating Commission, the nominees are, in alphabetical order, Benjamin Bagwell, Larry Baldwin, William M. Brownwell Jr., Tom Csider, Ann Schuler and William Sykes.

CRCT results show Hall probably will meet requirements

It looks like Hall County schools will meet the standards of "adequate yearly progress" for the first time since the federal No Child Left Behind Act began, educators said.

Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests scores released this week suggest the Hall County school system, which has been a "needs-improvement" school system for the past several years, will make AYP when the state Department of Education makes its first AYP determinations of the year in mid-July.

Camp helps kids face loss

Camp Braveheart, founded in 1996 by the Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, is a weeklong summer camp designed to help children who have experienced a significant loss in their family.
