Wall Street’s tumult worries some residents

While the economic outlook darkened even further with bad reports on layoffs and consumer confidence, Friday was one of the quietest days since the financial meltdown began a month ago. Wall Street's tumultuous week turned out to be its best in five years.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 127 points Friday, but turned in the strong week because of two huge days of gains - a record 936-point jump on Monday and an increase of 401 points Thursday.

Thurmon Tanner project may go to Monroe contractor

A Monroe contractor has been named as the apparent low bidder for the last leg of a planned extension of Thurmon Tanner Parkway, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said Friday.

Gary's Grading and Pipeline Co. submitted the lowest bid out of 11 bidders on the project Friday, spokesman Mark McKinnon said.

Hall company investigated for fraud

A Gainesville business is the focus of a wide-reaching criminal investigation that could involve dozens of victims and losses in the millions.

Hall County Sheriff's Col. Jeff Strickland confirmed Friday that officials are conducting a financial crimes investigation into North Georgia Equipment Sales, an Aviation Boulevard business that deals in heavy equipment.

Hall tax assessor resigns

The chairman of Hall County's Board of Tax Assessors resigned Friday after the district attorney wrote a scathing letter that stopped short of bringing criminal charges for misuse of taxpayer money.

Emory Martin Jr., who served on the board since the late 1980s, was accused of misappropriating more than $60,000 by padding per diem time sheets and taking $100 per day payment for days when he did not work.

Jefferson school board approves more room for schools

The Jefferson City Schools Board of Education has approved the removal of the annex building at Jefferson High School in exchange for more classroom space and a larger cafeteria.

"Jefferson High School only has three classrooms available for future growth," said John Jackson, school system superintendent. "There is also a kitchen problem (at the high school). It's the smallest one in the entire school system."

Unemployment rate steady in Gainesville, increases statewide

While statewide employment hit a 16-year high in September, Gainesville's jobless rate remained the same. While the state has not released localized percentages for September, in August Gainesville's rate of unemployment was 5.5 percent, up 0.2 percent from July.

Emergency helicopter is coming to Gainesville

Considering that Hall County is home to the region's largest hospital, many people are surprised to learn there has never been an air ambulance service stationed in Gainesville.

But that will change later this month. LifeNet Georgia, which currently operates a helicopter out of a base in Jefferson, is leasing the helipad at Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Lanier Park campus.
