Only a handful of local sex offenders so far have taken advantage of a change in state law that lifted restrictions on where many of them could live and work.
Since Gov. Sonny Perdue signed the law May 21, only 14 of Hall County's 247 registered sex offenders have come into the sheriff's office to provide authorities with new address information, said Investigator Mike Mazarky. He estimated half of those were new registrants.
Hall County, its cities and school boards met Monday at the Georgia Mountains Center to ask their legislative delegation for help making changes at the state level to bring home more sales tax dollars.
No injuries resulted from a fire that evacuated one apartment building and displaced residents of three apartment units Monday evening.
Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said three city stations responded to a fire at Glenn Cove Apartments on Norton Drive. The call came in about 5:40 p.m. Canada said the fire had been contained after about 14 minutes.
