Oakwood sets tax hearings

Oakwood plans to keep its 2009 tax rate the same, but will need to hold public hearings as the rate is expected to raise more revenue than it has this year.

The rate is proposed at 2.48 mills, with 1 mill equal to $1 for each $1,000 in assessed property value. Property is assessed at 40 percent.

Georgia unemployment level highest in 15 years

The Georgia Department of Labor reported Wednesday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.3 percent in August, the highest in 15 years. The jobless rate was up 1.9 percentage points from 4.4 percent at this same time last year. During the same period, the number of payroll jobs decreased 37,700 or nine-tenths of 1 percentage point.
