3 stabbings, 4 injured, 1 arrested, 1 on the loose

Hall County sheriff's deputies and Gainesville police officers are investigating three separate stabbings during the July Fourth weekend that resulted in serious injuries to four people, one arrest and the search for one suspect.

Roommates Lalo Gomez, 35, and Henry Velasquez Pineda, 36, began arguing at 2:52 a.m. Sunday in their home in the 300 block of Lee Street in Gainesville, said Lt. Brian P. Kelly of the Gainesville Police Department on Monday.

Lula woman sentenced to federal prison

A Lula woman was sentenced Monday in Gainesville to four years and nine months in federal prison on tax-related fraud charges.

Molly A. Smith, 50, also was placed on three years of supervised release and ordered by U.S. District Judge William C. O'Kelley to pay restitution of $413,847 to the IRS and $777,901 to North Carolina.

Hall residents could split tax payments

Harrington, a champion for technical schools, dies at 82

James Harrington, a driving force in the modernization of Georgia's system of technical colleges, has died following an extended illness. He was 82.

Harrington, who also served as a Forsyth County commissioner, was among the first members named to the State Board of Technical and Adult Education by then-Gov. Joe Frank Harris.
