Humane Society of Hall County: Fewer strays, fewer euthanizations

As of July 1, the number of animals accepted by the Humane Society of Hall County will drop drastically. That's when the nonprofit organization will end its contract with Hall County Animal Control and will no longer take in strays brought to the shelter by officers.

Used bookstore holds 24-hour Read-A-Thon to boost Alliance for Literacy

Roughly 60 teenagers from Lanier Career Academy and Gainesville State College will be spending tonight reading quietly. And these teens aren't on restriction this weekend. They're participating in Hall Book Exchange's first Read-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit the Gainesville-Hall County Alliance for Literacy.

Church holds fundraiser for North Georgia food bank

People went to First Baptist Church in Gainesville on Thursday to fill their bowls to raise money and awareness for hunger in the community at the second annual Empty Bowls Luncheon.

The luncheon is a localization of a national fundraiser, which combines pottery and philanthropy to raise awareness of hunger and raise funds for food banks. Proceeds from the event benefit the Georgia Mountain Food Bank Fund at the North Georgia Community Foundation.

Flowery Branch to phase in water, sewer rates for apartment complex

FLOWERY BRANCH - The Flowery Branch City Council voted Wednesday to phase in over a year new sewer and water rates for TreePark apartments off Thurmon Tanner Parkway.

With a hike in rates this summer, the complex "had a utility bill for water and sewer that rose (about) 143 percent, which was obviously quite a shock to their budget," City Manager Bill Andrew told the council.
