2 Jackson County jailers fired after inmate hanging

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has closed its investigation into the death of a Jackson County Jail inmate, and the findings have led to two jail employees losing their jobs.

"As a result of the internal investigation, two jail employees have been terminated from employment for failing to follow proper procedures," said Major David Cochran of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Hall County tax payments trickling in

By Friday afternoon, 71 percent of Hall County property taxes had been paid, and though there are still more to process, Tax Commissioner Keith Echols said he thinks there will be more late tax payments this year than in the past.

"It's a little bit worse than what I thought it was going to be," Echols said.

Florida man acquitted of child molestation

A 20-year-old Florida man who faced a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years and lifetime registry as a sex offender if convicted of child molestation was acquitted by a Hall County jury Friday.

Joshua Stewart, who was 17 when he was accused of molesting a 4-year-old girl he was baby-sitting in an Athens Highway mobile home, wept after the jury found him not guilty on two counts of aggravated child molestation, his lawyer said.

No connection between chaplain and murder suspects, police say
