Fatal crash shuts down I-85

All lanes on Interstate 85 South were closed for about six hours Thursday morning following an injury crash that resulted in one man's death, according to officials from Georgia State Patrol.

Georgia unemployment level highest in 15 years

The Georgia Department of Labor reported Wednesday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.3 percent in August, the highest in 15 years. The jobless rate was up 1.9 percentage points from 4.4 percent at this same time last year. During the same period, the number of payroll jobs decreased 37,700 or nine-tenths of 1 percentage point.

Flowery Branch will not increase tax rate next year

FLOWERY BRANCH - The Flowery Branch City Council voted to keep its 2008-09 tax rate the same Wednesday morning.

The council OK'd a 2.837 millage rate, with 1 mill equal to $1 for each $1,000 in taxable property value. Properties are assessed at 40 percent.

Mike Kelley wins mayoral race in city of Baldwin

Mike Kelley captured 60 percent of the vote in a four-man special election for mayor of Baldwin Tuesday.

In complete, but unofficial results, Kelley received 122 votes, Jerry Neace was second with 57. Former Mayor Mike Reed had 14 votes and Thomas Loudermilk had 11 votes.
