Heavy rains cause minor sewage spill in Lula

Early morning rains caused a small sewage spill this morning at the Hood Street Pump Station in Lula.

Lula officials estimate that between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., heavy rains caused a nearby creek to flood and exceed the capacity of the pump station. Fewer than 100 gallons of raw sewage were spilled.

Shuler to get 11 weeks of severance pay

Former Gainesville City Manager Bryan Shuler will receive an 11-week severance package, one week for each year he worked for the city, a divided City Council decided Thursday morning.

With a 3-2 vote, the council agreed to pay Shuler a total of $28,520.80. Mayor Myrtle Figueras referred to the decision as a "financial settlement" with Shuler, who resigned suddenly last month, just days after he was placed on administrative leave while officials investigated sexual harassment allegations against him.

Hall, Gainesville schools honored for closing achievement gap

The state Board of Education awarded two of four statewide grants to Hall County and Gainesville school systems in recognition of the systems' progress in closing the achievement gap between students who are economically disadvantaged and those who are not.

Each school system will receive $50,000 in federal Title I Distinguished Districts grant awards. Compared to school districts across the state, Hall County and Gainesville school systems made the greatest gains in the 2007-2008 school year in closing the scoring gap on the Criterion Referenced Competency Test and the Georgia High School Graduation Test. More people are applying for seasonal jobs

While most businesses tend to hire more employees during the holiday season to cover higher customer volume, current unemployment rates have created an unbalanced ratio of available positions compared to available applicants.

"We usually bring in a few extra people to help process all of the holiday packages, and this year is no exception. We're not adding more positions than we had last year, but we aren't hiring fewer people either," said Bimbo Briscoe, the co-owner of Mail Boxes Etc. on John Morrow Parkway in Gainesville.

Area dog lovers help to rescue spaniels

There were just shy of 101 of them, and they weren't Dalmatians, but there were more than 50 English springer spaniels rescued from a Midwest puppy mill thanks to the dedication of several North Georgia dog lovers.

Volunteers for English Springer Rescue America Inc., an organization that aims to rescue, rehabilitate and find new homes for springers, took on more than 50 springer spaniels and delivered them to foster homes across the country this past weekend.
