Bulldogs drop SEC opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The first half for Mississippi State and Georgia was a story of defensive stops and missed opportunities.

The second half was different and Mississippi State pulled out a 60-49 victory Saturday to extend its winning streak to six games. Mississippi State (11-5, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) has not lost at home since Dec. 13.

ATHENS - In 75 seconds, Ole Miss guard Shantell Black almost single-handedly wiped out a double-digit deficit.

Black scored nine straight points early in the second half as the upstart Lady Rebels threatened. But after a timeout by Georgia, the No. 10 Lady Bulldogs took charge again and finished with a 75-62 win Thursday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Men's basketball: Dogs earn more bragging rights

ATHENS - Georgia claimed state bragging rights over Georgia Tech, which was about the only significance of this game. Neither team looked like it was ready to challenge for a championship anytime soon.

Billy Humphrey scored 23 points, Corey Butler hit two big 3-pointers and the Bulldogs held on for an ugly win, 79-72 Wednesday night.

How 'bout them Dawgs! Georgia No. 2 in final poll

The Georgia Bulldogs finished No. 2 in the final Associated Press college football poll, released just hours after LSU beat Ohio State 38-24 to win the national championship.

Georgia received three first-place votes in the season's final poll. USC, which also got a first-place vote, finished third. Georgia ended the season 11-2 and beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl 41-10.
