State volleyball tourney opens today in Atlanta

Beginning at 9 this morning, four teams from Region 7-AAA will begin competing for a state title in the Class AAA state volleyball tournament held at Riverwood High and Westminster, both located in Atlanta.

West Hall, the No. 3 seed out of Region 7-AAA, will take on Harris County, the No. 2 seed out of Region 2-AAA at Riverwood High at 9 a.m.

Prep football: White County 28, East Hall 7

CLEVELAND - White County's playoff hopes stayed alive with a 28-7 win against East Hall Friday night in Cleveland. The Warriors (5-3, 2-1 Region 7A-AAA) are in a three-way tie for the second playoff spot in the subregion with Chestatee and Lumpkin County.

White County owns the tie-breaker advantage over Chestatee with a 35-21 win last week. The Warriors conclude the regular season on Nov. 9 at Lumpkin County.

Prep football: Gainesville 34, Johnson 18

Gainesville's offense has received most of the credit for the Red Elephants' first five wins, so Friday night it was the defense's turn.

The Red Elephants' defense forced two turnovers and held down Johnson's running game in the second half for a 34-18 win at Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium. The win gives Gainesville the lead in the chase for the playoffs in Region 7B-AAA.

Buford ready to 'go big'

BUFORD - For the four seniors leading the 2007 Buford High softball team into today's start of the Class AA state finals in Columbus, one thing is certain, they won't be satisfied with anything less that a state title.

Lady Wolves' starting pitcher Melissa Higginbotham, outfield Nichole Bell, second baseman Jennifer Tucker and catcher Ashley Razey have been part of two Lady Wolves' teams that have finished in third place, in 2005 and 2006, and aren't interested in a similar finish.

Gainesville's Kendrick Harris scores seven touchdowns, named Player of the Week

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville High tailback Kendrick Harris is almost speechless regarding his seven-touchdown performance last Friday night at City Park.

The Red Elephants' running back, who is listed at 5-foot-6, scored on runs of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 17 yards in Gainesville's (5-3, 1-1 Region 7B-AAA) 77-35 rout of Pickens. Harris also added an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and had two catches for 33 yards.
