FLOWERY BRANCH - On a cloudless day on courts at two Flowery Branch locales, Sterling on the Lake and Alberta Banks Park, tennis teams from Region 7-AAA began their bids for not only a region title but, also, a state playoff berth.
It began with two goals by Lady Falcons' sophomore forward Lindsay Porter in the first half and ended with a bang off the foot of senior defender DeLana Thomas who, on a direct kick with two minutes left in the game, gave Flowery Branch its fifth and final goal in a 5-2 win over Chestatee on Tuesday at Chestatee.
FLOWERY BRANCH - The already close race for the Region 7-AAA baseball title just got tighter.
Faced with stopping the hottest team in the region - the Gainesville Red Elephants - Cody Ackerman and the Flowery Branch Falcons showed no signs of fear and ended Gainesville's 10-game winning streak to the tune of a 9-1 victory on Friday at Hog Mountain Sports Complex.
Jefferson's Jed Gurley isn't used to being the center of attention, but after the game the Dragons' No. 9 hitter had Friday night, it would be hard to get overlooked.
Gurley, a senior, connected on his only home run of the season for Jefferson (11-3, 10-0 Region 8-A) and drove in six runs as part of a 14-2 win over Lakeview Academy (10-6, 7-2) in Gainesville. He finished the game 3-for-3 with a fifth-inning RBI double and reached base in all five at bats.
