GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Wrestling Championships played out just like they were supposed to heading into the day's final round at Chestatee High.

West Hall and Flowery Branch, the county's top two teams with its top two wrestlers, remained undefeated and conveniently faced off in the seventh and final round of the duals tournament with the title on the line.

Wrestling: Falcons swoop into county tournament

GAINESVILLE-Flowery Branch High wrestling coach Shane Lancaster couldn't have been more pleased with the way his Falcons opened up the Hall County Duals on Thursday evening at Chestatee High.

Six of seven Flowery Branch grapplers that reached the finals of the traditional format emerged with an individual title. Now the real test begins with the duals battle tonight and Saturday for county bragging rights.

War Eagles' Smith continues hot streak

Chestatee High senior Parker Smith scored 46 points and led the War Eagles (10-3) to a 86-44 win against Atlanta International Thursday night in Atlanta. It marks the Tennessee State signee's second highest point total this season after finishing with 53 on Dec. 21 against Johnson.

Prep wrestling: 2007 Hall County Duals have a new format

Hall County's wrestling coaches found a problem after last year's Hall County Duals at West Hall High. After some tinkering to the tournament format, they hope that the problem is now just a thing of the past.

At the time, it became apparent among the group that a better way could be implemented to crown the individual champions. In the past, coaches simply voted at the end of the meet to determine the best wrestler in each weight class.

University of South Carolina signee Sada Wheeler led the three East Hall scorers in triple digits, all seniors, with 24 points Wednesday night en route to a 60-49 win against West Hall in Valhalla. Tierra Benton added 20 points for the Lady Vikings (9-4) and Jessica Blackwell had 10.

Mills and Wirsing take home medals in wrestling tournamnet

Johnson wrestlers Joey Wirsing and Micah Mills earned medals at a tournament held at Winder Barrow High over the weekend. Both wrestlers were the top seed in their respective weight class.

Wirsing finished first at 171 pounds with a second period pin of his opponent from Winder in the tournament finals. He won by pin over a wrestler from Dacula in the semifinals.
