Buford Wolves: The debate commences: Best ever?

It didn't take long for the question to be asked last Saturday night.

While Buford football players were celebrating their first Class AA state championship since 2003 in a constant rain and cold wind, coach Jess Simpson was fielding the question in a variety of forms.

Football: Wolves take top spot; Trojans, Raiders land in top 10

Although weather conditions played their part, a 39-2 three-year record proved to be the overwhelming reason Buford was crowned the champs in Class AA.

Playing in heavy rain and winds Buford demolished No. 2 Lovett 50-0 last Saturday and finished on top of the Class AA Associated Press poll.

Basketball: Elephants smother Indians in rout

GAINESVILLE - The Red Elephants got scoring contributions from 12 of their 15 roster players and, thanks to a smothering 1-2-2 half-court defense, held Lumpkin County to 20 points in their 61-20 rout of the Indians on Tuesday night in Gainesville.

"We have been working hard on defense and trying to execute a lot better," Gainesville coach Jerry Davis said. "We wanted to play some defense that was more solid and force the tempo up a little bit."

Basketball: Falcons to fly on Atlanta's big stage

On March 1 of this year a tornado tore through the town of Enterprise, Ala. In the path of the twister that left a space of devastation about 200-yards wide was Enterprise High School.

The tornado ripped the roof off parts of the school, in which students were sheltered in hallways as the storm struck, destroyed the gym and football stadium and left five students dead.

Basketball: Gainesville comes back after speech

GAINESVILLE - All the Gainesville girls' basketball team needed was a little talking to.

Following the first quarter, a quarter in which the Class AAA No. 7-ranked Lady Red Elephants allowed Lumpkin County to jump out to a seven-point lead with all-around lackadaisical play, coach Manson Hill spoke to his team in the calmest of angry voices.

Basketball: Falcons rebound with win

Led by four players in double figures, including a 20-point effort by power forward Izaan Cross, the Class AAA No. 5-ranked Falcons recovered from a disappointing loss in the finals of Lanierland to beat North Hall, 76-63, on Monday.

Former Lumpkin coach McCrary to be inducted into wrestling Hall of Fame

John McCrary compiled a 236-94-6 record during his 20-year career as head coach of the Lumpkin County High wrestling program from 1986-2006. His wrestlers won seven individual state titles during that time, including a pair of two-time state champions, and he led the team to a state-runner up finish in 2001.
