Chestatee's Chase Vasser commits to Bulldogs

The Class of 2008 recruiting class isn't even officially finalized yet, but the University of Georgia's 2009 class is already taking shape. And for the third year in a row the Bulldogs will be taking a member of The Times Football All-County or All-Area team.

Chestatee's Chase Vasser, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior linebacker, became Georgia's third commitment for the class of 2009 on Monday.

Gainesville coach gets win No. 700

The numbers don't lie when painting the picture of Jerry Davis' remarkable coaching career at Gainesville High: he's a local legend. The Red Elephants' coach reached the latest milestone in his 34-year career with win No. 700 coming against Buford on Saturday night in Gainesville.

It's the most recent accomplishment for the coach who led the Red Elephants to two state titles (1983 and 1984), eight state semifinal appearances and an astounding 14 Region championships over his career. Belle of the Ball: East Hall's Tierra Benton models and starts for the Lady Vikings

In regard to Tierra Benton, East Hall teacher Steve Pettit said, "She's got a bright future."

With a 4.07 GPA while taking an Advanced Placement course load at East Hall, she's ranked 12th in her class; modeling shots of her in Macy's catalogue and Jezebel magazine, region championships in three different track and field events and a tireless will on the basketball court; a limitless future is more like it.

Eagles take state swimming title

The Riverside Military Academy swim team captured its sixth consecutive GISA state title with a win Saturday at Riverside. The Eagles finished with 101 points ahead of second place finisher Augusta Prep Day School.

Mount de Sales Academy finished third with 65 points. First Presbyterian Day finished fourth with 57 points. The rest of the finishers in order were Brookwood School, Dominion Christian, Southland Academy, Stratford Academy, Westminster Schools of Augusta, Tattnall Square Academy, Deerfield Windsor, George Walton Academy and Central Fellowship Christian.

Two more Buford football players commit

Another pair of Buford High football players have made decisions for where to play in college. Wolves linebacker Jay Tee Swanson gave a verbal commitment to Miami of Ohio on Friday. He chose to play football for the Red Hawks over the Air Force Academy. As a senior, Swanson made 107 tackles, seven quarterback pressures and a sack. Buford offensive lineman J.J. Miller committed to Wofford College. Miller was a two year starter at offensive tackle for the Wolves.
