Two newcomers making a mark in Region 7-AAA

Region 7-AAA used to be a fairly predictable region when it came to football. The same cluster of teams would lay claim to the four playoff spots more often than not. Even when the subdivided region came into play in 2006 things didn't change all that much.

Vikings get first win in double OT, 33-26

East Hall quarterback Desmon Gardner scored on a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line to give the Vikings a 33-26 win in double overtime over Gilmer and their first win of the season on Friday night in Ellijay.

Gardner led the Vikings (1-3) to victory with two touchdown runs (8 and 1 yard). East Hall's quarterback also threw an 80 yard touchdown pass to senior Kiante Young. Gardner finished the game with 250 yards passing. Young had 100 yards receiving.

Football scoreboard: Banks County tops Rabun County, 35-6

The Banks County football team defeated Rabun County 35-6 on Friday night in Tiger.

Justin Beasley led the way for Banks County (2-2, 2-1 8-AA) with 177 yards rushing and three touchdowns as well as a 40-yard reception. Leopards quarterback Chris Porter completed six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Kane Duncan also added a pair of catches for 17 yards and a touchdown. Bill Redmon intercepted a pass late in the game and returned it for a touchdown.

Scoreboard: Gainesville volleyball wins one in Winder tourney

The Gainesville High volleyball team picked up a win against Madison County 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 15-7) on Saturday at the Winder-Barrow tournament in Winder. The Lady Red Elephants lost matches to Winder-Barrow 2-0 (25-11, 25-20) and Monroe-Area 2-0 (25-11, 28-26).

Class AAA's No. 8 Gainesville now stands alone as the only unbeaten team in Hall County after a 27-0 win against North Hall on Friday night at The Brickyard. The Red Elephants (4-0) have absolutely dominated to this point, allowing only 14 points this season.

Jackson County ties Prince Avenue, 12-12

BOGART -- There was no clear winner in Friday's game between Jackson County and Prince Avenue.

The game ended in a 12-12 tie and left Panthers coach Billy Kirk shaking his head after his team missed an extra point late in the fourth quarter that cost them a victory.

With a large lead quickly dwindling, Lumpkin County coach Dustin Allen went with his ace Cody Waters earlier than he had hoped Tuesday against East Hall. The right-handed senior responded with 5 2/3 innings of steady work in long-relief duty, allowed only one run and led the Indians (14-8, 11-5 Region 7-AAA) to an 11-6 win in Gainesville.
